Born in 1947, James Perowne joined BRNC Dartmouth in 1965 and was awarded the Queen's Sword on passing out of the college in 1968. He joined submarines and served in two Porpoise class diesel boats before being seconded to the frigate HMS Jupiter for a year with Prince Charles as a fellow Lieutenant. He then commanded HMS Opportune, HMS Superb (after which he was awarded the OBO, the frigate HMS Boxer, the Second Submarine Squadron and HMS Norfolk as Captain F6.
On promotion to Rear Admiral, he went to the Royal College of Defence Studies as Senior Directing Staff (Navy) and then as the Flag Officer Submarines. His final appointment was as D
