Literacy

Literacy Service within Luton Schools

For some 20 years, Luton Someries has had a long term involvement with Wauluds Bank lnfant and Junior Schools here in Luton. The club offers reader and listener support to children based in the school, some of whom clearly miss parental involvement in reading practice.

Our involvement is attending the school once a week to sit and listen to the children reading, either individually or in small groups, depending upon their ability. This enables the classroom assistants to spend more time with their other duties.
The children benefit from having one to one time with a mature professional individual who will listen to them, help with understanding and pronunciation, encourage them and raise their self esteem. The Rotarian completes a reading diary which monitors their weekly progress.
The benefit for the Rotarians, is regular input into a child's education and an understanding of the difficulties of basic literacy skills within our local primary schools.
