In about 1981 we formed a formal relationship with the Rotary Club of Melle (now called Melle-pays Mellois) in France.  The town of Melle is situated in the Poitou-Charentes region of France in the Departement of Deux-Sevres.  It is about 54 kilometres south of Poitiers and 78 kilometres east of La Rochelle.

In 1981 some members of our Club visited Melle and in the following year Rotarians from the Melle Club accompanied by their wives visited our Club.  Since then there have been regular visits by both Clubs sometimes coinciding with a special event (Charter Night - when a Club celebrates its formation) being held by the hosting Club.

A visit usually means that a visiting Rotarian with their spouse or partner will stay at a home of a Rotarian of the host Club.  The host Club arranges visits to places of interest in their locality and provide hospitality throughout their stay.

When we have visited Melle they have taken on tours of the Hennessey in Cognac, a Goats cheese factory and farm, we have visited Niort, La Rochelle, the Abbey Fontevrault, Isles D'Aix and de Re, the silver mines at Melle and the Marais Poitevin, numerous restaurants as well as enjoying the hospitality of Rotarians and their families in their homes.

When Rotarians from Melle with their wives and partners have visited us we have taken them to Bristol Cathedral, SS Great Britain, Wells Cathedral, Berkeley Castle, Westonbirt Arboretum, Cotswold Spring Brewery and the Mall and numerous pubs as well as being entertained in the homes of Rotarians.

The experience of the visits has been very positive.  We have enjoyed fun and fellowship despite some language handicaps.  We have been able to exchange ideas about Rotary projects and help develop acquaintances into friendship at an international level.  You begin to realise that as Rotarians we have more in common with each other than what we hold different.
