Photos from our meeting on January 29.11.2012

Founder-member Jack Clay was not able to attend the club's 50th charter celebration, but came to our meeting on November 29, thereby allowing President David Knight to honour a pledge he made at the dinner to President of Rotary GB&I John Minhinick; namely to present Jack with his 50-year award as soon as possible.

It's some weeks since 97-year-old Jack was at the club and he was given a rousing welcome before sitting at the top table along with Doug Rollason, who was also making his first attendance for several weeks.

The certificate given him by President David, like the one presented to Harry Tharp, and to Duncan Lucas of the Rotary Club of Wigston, the previous week, was signed by President of Rotary International Sakuji Tanaka reads "This certificate is presented to Jack Clay of the Rotary Club of Oadby a member club of Rotary International in recognition of 50 years service as a Rotarian and in appreciation for demonstrated commitment to the ideal of SERVICE ABOVE SELF and dedication to the Objects of Rotary".

Geoff Taylor is a founder-member of the Rotary Club of Oadby, but took time out when he was in general medical practice and rejoined the club in 1994.

Later in the meeting, Terry Gooding and Harry Tharp, who were both made Paul Harris Fellows, thanked members of the club for their support and friendship.

Roger Neuberg showed club members the Knight's Shield. It is inscribed: "THE KNIGHTS SHIELD.  Donated by David and Margarete Knight to the Rotary Club of Oadby on the occasion of their 50th Charter November 2012". Future presidents are invited to award it to the Rotarian who has done most for the club and movement.

The post-charter meeting was conducted in an almost euphoric atmosphere when President David was able to announce that the event had broken even, financially. There was a round of applause for waitress Helen, who normally looks after the club but who spent the afternoon of 22.11.2012 preparing the room.

There was also generous applause for the whole organising committee and for member Karen Storey, who used her admirable artistic skills to produce the tasselled menu.
