For the past twenty-five years, Rotary International has been at the forefront of the fight to eradicate Polio from the world.

Cheam and Sutton Rotary have been involved in this effort from the start and are proud that in the past three years we have played our part in helping Rotary International raise in excess of US$200 million to match US$335 million in challenge grants provided by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

You may have seen our bed of purple crocuses in Cheam Village, where we raised funds by getting local school children to make a donation to plant a crocus. This year our crocuses are decorating the Cheam Park.

The US$535 million raised by Rotary International and the Bill and Melinda Foundation will be used to support immunisation programmes in developing countries where Polio continues to infect and paralyse children robbing them of their futures and compounding the hardships of their families.

As well as raising funds to support immunisation programmes thousands of Rotarians from all over the world have given up their time to travel to these developing countries and take part and administer the vaccine. In the past twelve months, there have been no reported new cases in India. However there have been new cases reported in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria.

Until this disease is completely eradicated Rotary International and its partners will continue to work with governments to fund and run immunisation programmes. The Rotary Club of Cheam and Sutton intends to continue to play its part in this battle.
