Our guest speaker on January 15th was Mr. Stuart Ryan of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) who is the north Wales area manager for membership development. His talk was entitled "Nature is amazing. Lets keep it that way."
The RSPB was started in 1889 by Emily Williamson as a protest group campaigning against the use of the feathers of exotic birds in hats. It was originally known as the Plumage League. RSPB Cymru was established in 1911 initially to protect Roseate Terns.
The work of the RSPB includes
Stuart told us that there are 18 nature reserves in Wales and described two, the Conwy Nature Reserve and South Stack in Anglesey.
As with most organisations looking to the future is important and the RSPB hopes to develop "Futurescapes", which is managing much larger tracts of land than nature reserves.
