Our own member, Aldie Robarts, gave a talk on his years in Nigeria and Ghana. Aldie's desire to see parts of the British Empire led him to apply for a position with the company John Holt of Liverpool who traded in a variety of goods in the colonies making up the then British West Africa.
Aldie arrived in the UK from Toronto in 1954 and was successful with his application and was soon on his way to Kano in northern Nigeria as an Agent (manager) in the company.
Aldie described, with the aid of slides, aspects of life in Nigeria and the Gold Coast ( which became Ghana after independence in 1956) in the second half of the 1950's.
We were given glimpses of the life of a British ex pat who in those days dressed in their work "uniform" of white shirts, long white shorts and long white socks. Each ex pat family was looked after by a number of servants including a cook, washer boy, steward, driver and gardeners.
These ex pats worked hard in the interests of the company and had a full social life centred around dinner parties and weekend evenings spent in the British Club.
Aldie showed us typical scenes of the area and the life of the local people
