Our first speaker in February was Eira Jones who gave us an account of Plas Pren or Gwylfa Hiraethog, the now ruined house on Mynydd Hiraethog near to the Sportsman Arms Inn. Her family were the last to live in the house leaving in 1955.
The house was built in 1897 by Hudson Ewebank Kealy, First Viscount Davenport. He was a Liberal MP for Davenport and through his friendship with David Lloyd George, became very interested in Welsh culture and life. In 1894, on a trip to Norway, he saw wooden chalets and thought one of these would be an ideal base for staying in when grouse shooting in the Hiraethog area. He had one shipped to Wales and it was constructed on site. It was said to be the highest inhabited abode in Britain at 1,627 feet above sea level. The total cost was
