Speaker February 26th 2013

Our speaker on February 26th, Dyfrig Roberts, returned to the topic of the National Eisteddfod of Wales. Dyfrig is well qualified to speak on the National Eisteddfod since he is

• the Eisteddfod's consulting engineer
• chairs the National Technical committee of the Eisteddfod
• a Board member, and
• is the Herald Bard with responsibility for all ceremonial aspects of the Gorsedd of the Bards

Dyfrig spoke about all aspects of the eisteddfod from the history of the eisteddfod to the wealth generation aspects to the erecting of the pink pavilion.

The first mention of an eisteddfod was in 1176 at Aberteifi and in the 1523 eisteddfod in Caerwys bards were graded according to status for the first time.  The first national Eisteddfod in the modern sense was in 1861 in Aberdare.
