Thomas Muir of Huntershill was considered by many as the father of Scottish democracy. A lawyer, born in Kirkintilloch, he lived atthe time ofthe French Revolution and was greatly influenced and in favour of this movement. Such were his activities in trying to bring about similar reform on these shores that he was sentenced and transported to Australia for 14 years. A radical and Scottish Nationalist he makes an appropriate subject for this time of independence consideration.
