Speaker Meeting - Arthur Brookes - Old Time Music Hall

On Thursday 27th.June Arthur Brooks visited the club to talk about Old Time Music Hall.

Arthur is an enthusiastic speaker and he had the full attention of our club members as he recalled the times from his childhood when his parents regularly took him to the Saturday Variety shows in London. These shows were the nearest thing to the original Old Time Music Hall shows and were the start of his passion for this form of entertainment.

As Arthur usually speaks for at least an hour (he has 3 different talks about Old Time Music Hall) he was a little rushed but he still managed to convey the excitement and atmosphere of the original shows.As he played some of the original recordings of a few of the stars he even had some of the Rotarians singing along, albeit a little 'restrained'. Some of the stars of Music Hall that he talked about were Harry Champion,Little Tich, Marie Lloyd,Keppel and Betty, and Charlie Chaplin.

It was a most enjoyable talk and it would be just great if we could have Arthur back one evening in the future when we could hear the full version of his talks.
