President Graham Smith welcomed 16 other members, and reported on the very successful Six Clubs Dinner at Cairndow the previous Wednesday evening attended by 12 from the club and 28 in all. Douglas Dow renewed his appeal to members for used stamps, spectacles and old mobile phones.
Immediate past president John McCormick spoke about the work of the Scottish Association for Public Transport, of which he is a very active member. It was founded in 1962 in response to Dr Beeching's axe falling on railway services, and its orginal name was the Scottish Railway Development Association.
Nowadays rail use has doubled since then, although the network is much smaller, and a number of the lines which Beeching closed have been reopened at considerable cost. Meanwhile bus use has plummeted, and car use has not increased dramatically.
