Club Meeting ~ Gordon Burgess/SGM

Tue, Dec 17th 2013 at 12:00 am - 2:00 am

Gordon Burgess spoke about his father-in-law's explosive activities in his garden, and John McCormick gave the vote of thanks. The meeting included a Special General Meeting, and a cheque presentation to the Helensburgh and District Alzheimer's Branch.

President Graham Smith welcomed 13 other members, and guest Victoria Macleod of the Helensburgh and District branch of the Alzheimer's Society. He announced that 17 members and partners would be attending the joint Christmas Dinner with the Garelochside club in Helensburgh Golf Club that evening.

Gordon Burgess spoke about one Sunday afternoon in 1965 when his father-in-law, Group Captain Ron Hockey, came to his Glade Estate home to try to remove excessive clay in the garden soil by using gelignite. He had members in stitches as he told how Ron set off two explosions which resulted in soil etc. landing in neighbouring gardens and on roofs, with one neighbour emerging from his house carrying a white flag.

After a deputation appeared from houses down the road, Ron agreed to cease using gelignite
