Clare Renton - Dumfries, Learning Town

Wed, Nov 12th 2014 at 12:00 am - 2:00 am

Clare outlined the latest thinking about the development of Dumfries Schools from now to 2018.

As Strategy Leader for Physical Learning Environments in Dumfries & Galloway Clare explained the policy for the main schools in Dumfries now that we face a 40% overcapacity in school place provision, the old expectations of education being deemed no longer appropriate for the future and Dumfries now rebadged as "Dumfries, The Learning Town."

It proved a fascinating insight into what the Council now want to do, rebuilding schools, creating a learning hub, and much more.

The talk exposed Rotarians to the latest jargon ( watch out for questions in the next quiz ) and raised a series of questions from an audience perhaps a little sceptical about change and fashions in teaching methods.

Of course this was not helped by the age range of most members, who would admit to remembering  that apprenticeships have come, gone and now come back into vogue, that there is concern for learning the basics of reading, writing and arithmetic in a world where tablets are not always dispensed by the doctor.

Clare most ably handled the presentation and the questions that it created.
