History of Rotary Club of Pinner - 1970 to 1999


1970

Funds were raised towards a Woman's Ward day room at the Northwood and Pinner Cottage Hospital. Pinner House residents were taken to Whipsnade Zoo and musical instruments were provided for the boys of St Michael's School.

1971

Subscriptions were pegged at £9 and it was agreed that the Chairman of Pinner Round Table should be an Honorary member of the Club during his year of office.

1972

£250 was provided towards the cost of double glazing at Northwood and Pinner Cottage Hospital. The cost of the President's Dinner, held at the Castle Hotel, Windsor, was £2.25 a head.

1973

A sad year overshadowed by the death of the President Arthur White during his year of office. The President's widow Ros agreed that in his memory, donations were to be split between Pinner United Free Church, the Venture Club for Boys and a garden seat at a suitable venue.

1974

Unsuccessful efforts were made to establish a European Link.

1975

Money was raised to supply two beds for St Vincent's Hospital. Rumours were rife that we were to be united with Brussels East, but no firm information was available. Past-presidents Sir Rodney Swiss and George Turrell were elected Honorary Members of the Club.

1976

£50 was donated to the Royal School for the Deaf. Our essay competition for schools had as its subject 'Violence, its Causes and Cures'. The Walter Millaed Award was presented to pupil nurse Miss F. F. Mah.

1977

The Walter Millard Prize was awarded to student nurse P. Soriano. We sponsored Nower Hill School for the Royal Jubilee Youth Concert and also for Youth Speaks. The Club had an outing on the Thames up river from Windsor.

1978

Records show that we had an outing on the Thames again, this time down-river from Windsor.

1979

There was a Club visit to the Daily Mail and a Race Night was held at the Bee Hive.

1980

This year marked the 75th Anniversary of Rotary International and our Club celebrated with a special meeting with former members as guests. There was a preliminary visit by 10 members to Brugge West led by P.P. Stanley Hall.

1981

On May 27th, Pinner Rotarians and their ladies made our first official visit to Brugge West. An epoch making visit.

1982

This year was marked by the reciprocal visits from Brugge West and Meerbusch Clubs. Their visit included excursions to Harrow, London, Oxford and Windsor.

1983

After a March Race Night, we visited Meerbusch in May, a good time was had by all. We visited the Rotary Lifeboat at Dover.

1984

Race Night raises £1000 for our charitable funds. Paul Harris Fellowship bestowed on PP Tommy Thomas. £2000 donated to Mount Vernon Scanner Appeal. Visit made to BBC TV studios.

1985

Visit made to the Llandrindod Wells RC in mid-Wales and to RC Brugge West. £1500 donated to the MS Society. Visit to the Charter meeting of the Torhout Club, Belgium.

1986

Hosted Brugge West and Meerbusch. The Club had to leave Beechers Restaurant for a new venue, namely the Rayners Hotel. £260 raised playing carols at Raynors Lane Underground Station.

1987

Link Visit to Munster. £1000 donated to Association for Guide Dogs for the Blind. Quiz evening raised £150 and carol collection at Rayners Lane Station and Sainsbury's raised £750.

1988

Our team from Heathfield Girls School win Youth Speaks Out competition. Over £3300 raised for Polio Plus campaign. Chrstmas Tombola raises a record £550. £1000 donated to Cystic Fibrosis Holiday Fund.

1989

Link Visit to Bruges. Heathfield School wins Youth Speaks Out and we sponsor Nower Hill School visit to the Albert Hall for Youth Makes Music. Christmas Carol collection raises £1500.

1990

Special meeting held to discuss 'Women in Rotary' - Club decides against. Pinner host Link Visit in Cambridge. Almost £2000 raised at Christmas Carol collection at Marks and Spencer Foodstore. Club decides to change from meeting at lunchtimes to evenings.

1991

Quiz evening raises £300. Change of venue to Northwood Golf Club. £2200 donated to Leukaemia Research Trust. Link Visit to Meerbusch. Christmas Carol collection raises £1150 outside Marks and Spencer. Club considers a move from District 1130 to 1090.

1992

Link Visit to Brugge West. Heathfield School again reach final of Youth Speaks Out. Musical evening at Moor Park Mansion raises £500, event organised by Derek Brodie who sadly died the previous week. Christmas Carol collection raises £1300.

1993

Club donates £1500 to Cystic Fibrosis Trust and £400 to Macmillan Nurses Fund. Pinner again decline to allow ladies to join the Club by a very narrow margin. Pinner host Link Visit in Bath. Club sponsors the Purcell School at Youth Makes Music held at the Albert Hall.
Club moves to District 1090.

26th June 1993 Pinner Rotary Club celebrates its 50th Anniversary with a dinner at Moor Park Mansion attended by over 100 Rotarians and guests.
