Social Evening to Mark the 100th Anniversary of the British Declaration of war for WW1

Tue, Jul 22nd 2014 at 12:00 am - 2:00 am

Held at Formby Hall Golf Club and Spa.

Formby Rotary Club recently held an evening to commemorate the start of WW1. Club members and their guests dressed to reflect the times.

There were a fair number of NCOs, Officers and nurses gathered for the occasion, along with a war bride and her husband and three suffragettes!

The evening began with an opportunity to study a display of war memorabilia donated by various club members. A meal, typical of the era, stew followed by bread and butter pudding was served, NAFFI style.

During the evening the guests were entertained by poems written by soldiers in the trenches, a recitation, The Day War Broke Out and some excerpts from diaries kept by the uncle of a club member, whilst he was serving in France during WW1.

The finale of the evening was a sing-a-long to some of the classic songs from WW1, lead by Jo Farrow. Jo has just graduated from Uni and helped her student funds by transforming herself in the Forces Favourite in the evenings and entertaining the 'Troops' at various functions, complete with Army uniform and forties hairstyle. Everyone joined in with gusto!

All funds raised on the night will go to the British Legion Poppy Appeal. Jo kindly agreed to half her fee for such a good cause.
