The Rotary Club of Great Yarmouth
On Tuesday,25th February, 2014, we welcomed, as our speaker, Ben Stone, who is the Housing Manager of the YMCA at Great Yarmouth. We have, over recent years, supported this Charity with Christmas gifts for those who were in their care, and Ben told us just how much those gifts meant to the recipients who otherwise would have had nothing, and he brought with him their sincere thanks. Ben went on to explain to us how the Yarmouth Branch helped those who approached them for assistance. There are in Yarmouth three housing services, one on Wellesley Road which houses 13, another at the main office premises on Hall Quay which looks after 21 and there are also some people who are prepared to offer supported lodging in their homes. Apart from providing accommodation, the YMCA also teaches life skills to their clients, which it is hoped will enable them to cope when they leave. They run courses for basic cooking, money management, landlord and tenant rights and also training towards education and employment. They have counsellors on hand to offer help whenever needed. The services are open to young men between the ages of 16 and 25 and they are able to be accommodated for up to two years. There is always a demand for places and the Yarmouth has, in the past week, had enquiries from twelve people. Ben answered many questions put to him by members and Rtn John Roper thanked him for his very interesting insight to the work he does.
