Witney Rotarians invite you to join us at Cogges Manor Farm on Bank Holiday Monday, 4th May, to celebrate the Rotary Clubs 60th Anniversary with a Festival of Fleece.
Admission is free for young and old alike, it's our opportunity to thank the Witney Community for their support over the past 60 years.
The day's main theme will be spun around the story of the wool from the backs of the 'Cotswolds', a large breed of sheep sometimes referred to as 'Cotswold Lions'. Descendants of an ancient breed, the 'Cotswold' is surrounded by myths.
"A good Cotswold's body should have a firm, solid touch (not loose and flabby), and be well covered with thick set, long and lustrous fleece, in some ways rather resembling white dreadlocks".
This was the wool that was brought to the Blanket Mills in Witney, which in the hey-day brought great wealth to the Cotswold Landowners, Merchants and Millowners.
The resulting Witney Blankets were exported worldwide setting the standard for quality and value against which all other blankets were judged.
We'll celebrate the story of the Witney Blanket I whilst also celebrating the Diamond Jubilee of the Rotary Club of Witney.
We want to make it a day to remember, an enjoyable, amusing and entertainig occasion.
There's a special invitation for older members of the community to share the occasion with us. To this end we are planning to provide free transport for the elderly, infirm and disabled so that they too can visit Cogges without the concerns of travelling to and from the event.
