Purley's WW1 commemorations

"Early in 2014, at the suggestion of Rtn David Osland, Purley club council agreed to devote June and July meetings to a commemoration of the 100th. anniversary of the start of World War One. It was decided to start and finish each June meeting with a reading of extracts from war poems selected by volunteer Rotarians, whilst July meetings would each comprise two ten-minute presentations on subjects pertinent to WW1, again chosen by members. The final talk will  be a keynote address by an invited speaker and it would be open to guests.

War poets whose work is being presented include Siegried Sassoon; Wilfred Owen; Rudyard Kipling; John Galsworthy and Edward Thomas. A charming deviation from these famous poets will be the inclusion of a work by the granddaughter of one of our members entitled "Littered Lives".

The ten-minute talks cover a wide spectrum of subjects, including, The Balance of Naval Seapower; WW1 Composers; Women at War; The Evolution of Armoured Vehicles; Rotary in WW1 and The Role of Women Police in WW1. The keynote talk will be by Air Vice Marshall Clive Evans Rtd, who will speak on the Royal Flying Corps at our lunchtime meeting at 12.30pm for 1pm on 29th July, to which guests are welcome."
