We welcomed,on Tuesday, 21st April, 2014, as a Speaker, Sammy Morgan, a local boy who made a name for himself in the world of professional football. Sammy was born in Belfast to a Yarmouth mother and an Irish father. His father was a professional musician and when the family returned to Great Yarmouth it was to become the landlord of the Suspension Tavern Public House. Sammy attended the old Technical High School and he recalled how he was encouraged in the sporting field by one of his teachers, our own member, the Rev. Arthur Bowles to whom he said he owed a great debt of gratitude. After leaving school Sammy trained as a teacher and following qualification spent his early years teaching in Nottinghamshire. His footballing career began with Gorleston where he was spotted and was signed up as a professional by Port Vale, whose manager at the time was Stanley Matthews.
