Sir George Young MP

On Friday evening 5^th September 2014, Basingstoke Rotary Club,, organised an evening with Sir George Young MP, 6^th Baronet,  at Basingstoke Golf Club. It was a splendid evening attended by some 90 Rotarians and their guests including Rotarians from Basingstoke Deane Rotary Club, Basingstoke Loddon and Andover Rotary Club.

 Sir George has served as an MP since 1974 and he has been MP for NW Hants since 1997.

Prior to that he was MP for Acton/Ealing but the constituency became divided as a result of the Boundary Commission Reforms.

Prior to that in 1968, he started at Lambeth Borough Council.

He was elected to the Greater London Council in 1970 as one of the four members of the London Borough of Ealing. He served until elected as a Parliamentary Candidate in 1973.

 Sir George Young provided us with an amusing insight as to life as an MP, including his positions within the House and Government including;

1995 to 1997 Secretary of State for Transport. (Where is Derby?)

2010 to 2012 Leader of the House and Lord Privy Seal.

Following the resignation of Andrew Mitchell he became Chief Whip of the House of Commons in Oct 2012.

Between 2012 to 2014 he was Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasury.

 In November 2013 he announced his retirement in May 2015.
