Lunchtime Meeting - 12.45pm - Business Meeting

Mon, May 11th 2015 at 12:00 am - 2:00 am

The Club's regular Business Meeting is followed by the induction of two new members.

Rotary Club of Oswestry welcomed new members Mrs Sue Leonard and Prof Wagih El Masri to the Club today.

Professor Wagih El Masri was Director (and Consultant Surgeon) of the Department of Spinal Injuries at the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital from 1983 till his retirement in 2014.

As an international expert in spinal injuries, Professor Wagih El Masri has had an impact on the lives of thousands of people; there are literally hundreds of people who once lay paralysed with horrific injuries who eventually walked from hospital to lead full, active and productive lives.

Much of this is the result of the expert help given to them by Wagih which is an outstanding and remarkable legacy.

He left behind well documented case histories, X rays, pictures and/or videos of about 200 of those patients who have recovered and consented to make this material available in a library he developed for teaching, training and comparison of outcomes with other methods of treatment.  He is currently Emeritus Professor at the University of Keele where he continues to pass on his excellent treatment methods to students.

Professor El Masri FRCS Ed, FRCP spent 31 years at the world famous hospital at Gobowen, near Oswestry.  When he retired last year he reflected on his career:

“I have, to date, treated over 10,000 patients with SPI (Spinal Cord Injury) and personally managed almost all medical, surgical aspects of paralysis at all stages from the time of paralysis to the end of life,” he said. “With a team of allied professionals I also managed most non-medical aspects of paralysis.”

Wagih is also the President of  the Transhouse Trust, a registered charity for people with spinal cord injuries providing short-term (up to 2 years) accommodation, advice and support in 2 specially adapted wheel-chair accessible bungalows. He was the driving force for the Trust when it was set up in 1996 and this year a 3rd bungalow is due to be opened in the new Hignett Place development in Oswestry.

President David Gordon, upon inducting Wagih into the club said: "Wagih has been a good friend of Oswestry Rotary club for many years, even being presented some years ago with a Paul Harris Fellowship in recognition of his outstanding contribution to so many people in the Oswestry area and very much further afield.  It gives me enormous pleasure to induct him into our club."

Mrs Sue Leonard was also inducted to the club. Having trained in Llandaff, Cardiff in Food and Nutrition she began her teaching career in Reading transferring to Denefield in Tilehurst when schools became comprehensive. She remained there for a further 2 yrs.

She became Head of the Food and Textiles department at Rhyn Park School, St Martins where she remained for 11 years latterly becoming  Head of the Lower School where she was very involved with the local Junior Schools aiding the pupils' transition.

In 1990 Sue became Housemistress for the 56 girl boarders in Guinevere House at Oswestry School, still teaching Food, Nutrition and Textiles. She held that position for 13 years and remarked: "It was a role I thoroughly enjoyed and was the most rewarding time in my teaching career."

In 2003 she was promoted to Head of the Lower School where she remained until her retirement in 2013.

Sue enjoys public speaking, visiting the theatre and cinema, singing for pleasure, spending time in the garden, quilting, knitting, painting and free machine embroidery on silk. Sue adds: "and now I have become a member of Rotary, where I hope to make a positive contribution, particularly to the youth in our area."

Inducting her President David said: "Sue's experience with young people will be very useful in our work with local schools, particularly the Mock Interviews the club undertakes at The Marches Academy every year, as well as Youth Speaks at Oswestry Library and LifeLine which this year will aim to help around 450 Year 6s from English and Welsh local primary schools prepare to go to secondary school.  Welcome to Rotary Sue!"
