2014 Games for People with Disabilities at Eston Leisure Centre, Middlesbrough. Stokesley RC braving the javelins again.

2014 Northern Games for People with Disabilities took place on Sunday 13 July at Eston Leisure Complex, Middlesbrough. Around 100 competitors took part and although the weather on the day was mostly cool and showery, their enthusiasm for the event ensured that everyone had a great time. Stokesley RC, as usual, organised the javelin throwing, and this year saw 18 participants and a record-making throw of 81 feet, giving Dominic Elliott first place. Best wheelchair throw was recorded by a lady, Jill Conway. Best achievement was awarded to Ian Dewer, a regular competitor at the Games, who was unable for medical reasons to compete in the javelin this year, having had a heart bypass operation only a week before the event. He did participate in several less stressful activities at the Games and achieved an excellent result on the Distance Clubs, so we were sure he would have done well on the javelin if he had been able to take part. The outdoor events finished earlier than usual this year as the continuing rain made the grass surface a safety hazard for competitors.

The team from Stokesley RC had a great day at the Games in spite of the weather. President Ralph Formstone led the group, supported by Bob Blakey, John Rowley, Mike Irving and Peter Chandler. Special thanks to Judy Kitching for lending us her gazebo - it was essential to protect the team from the worst of the rain and will be returned when it's had time to dry !!
