In the Rotary Young Writer Competition this year, Rebecca Webster of Stokesley School won first place in the Stokesley Club heat, and James Macreath, also from the School, came Third. Rebecca s entry, vividly demonstrating the impact that playing golf has had on her life, then went forward into the District (Rotary Northeast) competition, where she again took first place. Certificates and cash prizes were presented to these students by Rotarian Judy Kitching MBE at the Rowan House assembly in Stokesley School on Wednesday 16 July.
The Young Writer competition was established by Rotary International several years ago to recognise and celebrate the talent of creative writing. In Great Britain and Ireland there are many young people who have or can develop this talent and Rotary seeks to promote creative writing through the RIBI Young Writer competition. Starting with Club level competitions, winners progress to District events and ultimately to a National final, with the winning work subsequently published in Rotary magazines and on the Rotary website. The quality of work submitted in this and previous years has been outstanding. The theme this year was - What a difference that made to my life/their lives. Within that theme, the entry could be fact or fiction, and on any topic the story teller wished to choose. The 2014 competition was split into three age bands - Junior, Intermediate and Senior; the upper two age bands being those applicable to senior schools and the Junior level to primary schools.
Rebecca is pictured here receiving both of her certificates and cash prizes from Judy Kitching, accompanied by her mother and Head of Rowan House, Samena Metcalfe.
