Young musician competition 2014

Rotary Young Musician of the Year 2014 The Congleton heats took place on January 29th at Congleton High School. 19 young people from Congleton High School, Eaton Bank Academy and Congleton Youth Orchestra took part in an entertaining and enthralling evening in either the Instrumental or Vocal Sections. An impressive range of instruments were heard including acoustic guitar, drums, bassoon, trumpet, violin, alto sax, piano and clarinet. The judges handed out written constructive criticism to each of the contestants and earned their complimentary bottles of wine. Rotary Club Present, Denis Murphy, handed out the certificates to all entrants and the winners and runners-up shields. The Instrumental Section was won by Joe Hearson whose performance on the piano was outstanding. Runners-up were Eloise Smith on the violin and Matthew Dakin on the drums. The winner in the Vocalist section was Katie Barlow, who was superb, and the runner-up was Rob Slater. The audience were entertained in the interval by some 30 members of Congleton Youth Orchestra, the youngest of whom was aged 7. The conductor was Judith Hearson. Our thanks to the music staff from both schools as well as the many helping hands from Congleton Rotary Club and Congleton Youth Orchestra. The winners and runners-up in both sections are invited to take part in the District Heats of the competition to be held on March 6th at Sir William Stanier Community School, Crewe. Philip Berry
