Herald report - Breaking Down the Barriers at Hoe event

Last Saturday saw the fourth annual Disabled Activity Day (DAD) on the Plymouth Hoe promenade.

The event was organised by Scoot-A-Long and the Rotary Club of Roborough, Plymouth and was about breaking down barriers and bringing disabled and able-bodied people together.

Visitors were able to find out about the opportunities being offered to people with learning disabilities.

Powerchair football was showcased by Ocean City Plymouth’s Powerchair Football Club, and disabled tennis brought to the Hoe by coach Mark Blackler.

Local bands Raikes, Buffalo Frame and Young Oliver and Young performed throughout the day.

Other entertainment was provided by Reach Community Drama with members Marion Marshall, Theresa Hooper, Mark Bridford, Angie Kuchenbecker and Andy Trigger awarded medals as a momento presented by John Seamons of Scoot-A-Long. Helpers of the drama group are Rosemrey Wallace, Sarah Chesters, Charlie Marlow and Reach organiser Karen Sharland. Reach hold workshops using drama, dance and music for adults with learning disabilities. Its show featured material they had been rehearsing over the last few months at their regular Tuesday evening sessions in Tavistock.

Roborough Rotary Club organiser Phil Greenwood said "The Club is committed to raising awareness of the activities and opportunities available to people with disabilities in the Plymouth area while at the same time raising public awareness of what people with disabilities have to offer.

I hope everyone who saw the activities on the Hoe will begin to view people with disabilities in a different light.

Working on the Disability Activity Day over the last few years has certainly been an eye opener for me."
