An Evening with Karen, Countess Spencer who speaks on behalf of "Whole Child International"

Club President Paul Bundyford and Countess Spencer

INTERNATIONAL EVENING 2015

The Club's annual "International Evening" was held at the Marriott Hotel, Northampton and this year our speaker was Karen, Countess Spencer, who spoke about "Whole Child International" of which she is Founder and CEO in a very interesting and inspiring way.

Targeting the largely overlooked emotional needs of society’s most at-risk children, Whole Child’s cost-effective, sustainable, and replicable program provides them with the tools they need to become productive members of society.  The Countess explained how she leads an international team of trainers, researchers, and other staff to change care systems, advocate and influence government policy, and to conduct research.  Whole Child programs are currently being set up with funding from the Korean government, through the Inter-American Development Bank and other donors in South America.  While recognising that current “best practice” is thought to be the elimination of orphanages, Whole Child takes the pragmatic view that where there is no possible alternative due to lack of resources, facilities with properly trained and genuinely caring support personnel can provide very young children with the start in life that they deserve, and do so within the budgets that poorer countries can afford.

A very impressive speaker, the Countess made an excellent case for her charity to which the Club was very pleased to make a donation from the evening’s profits.
