Isobel describes an exciting visit.
The Rotary club of East Sutherland had the pleasure of welcoming guest speaker Isobel Murray John who, as well as being the President of the Dornoch Academy Interact Club, was sponsored by our club to experience health care services and conditions in Southern India. Whilst intending to study law Isobel decided to volunteer rather than take a gap year as law is an incredibly difficult course to get into. During her time in India she was based in Trivandrum in the South of the country. The time saw her visiting state of the art well equipped teaching hospitals and rural health centres where doctors worked with the most basic of equipment. Her visit to a psychiatric ward was very informative as she helped support a young woman traumatised by the prospect of an arranged marriage. She described visiting a leprosy and HIV hospital/orphanage as inspiring saying 'For somewhere that could have been depressing and bleak, this was one of the brightest, liveliest places I have ever been to'. In thanking the club for their support Isobel indicated that the responsibility of organising the trip and travelling alone had vastly improved her self-confidence and independence whilst having the opportunity to visit India and experience a completely different culture was incredible.
Also visiting us as part of a "scatter week" were Rotarians from the Rotary clubs of Appleby and Eden Valley in Cumbria led by their President Jonty Rostron.
