Sat 28th February 2015 at 13.00 - 16.00

District Finals of The RIBI Young Musician Competition

The Rotary Club of Washington Forge was delighted to support three young people in the RIBI Young Musician 2015 Competition. On the 28th February, Sam Scott 9yrs, Caitlin Bannister 11yrs, and Jasmine Elliott 13yrs, travelled to St Bartholomews Church, Longbenton, to take part in the District Finals in either the 'Vocalist' or 'Instrumentalist' categories. They were joined by proud parents, along with co-ordinator Ron Monaghan and Phil Hopps from the Washington Forge Rotary Club.

All three opted for contemporary musical pieces, with Sam, the youngest competitor, being the first of our entrants to perform. He sang 'Electricity' from 'Billy Elliott The Musical'. He was followed by Caitlin who gave a rendition of 'Naughty' from the show 'Matilda'. Jasmine played piano and delivered the appropriate song of 'Piano Man' by Billy Joel.

Rotarian Tony Fairley compered the event and the adjudicators were Ms Helen Walker, BSc, M.Ed, PGCE; and Rotarian Cynthia Fairley J.P. All those taking part were of a high standard and the judges had a difficult task in making their decision. District Governor Jean Thompson presented the certificates and awards.

The great news is that Sam was highly commended and both Caitlin and Jasmine were awarded the 'runners-up' place in their respective sections. Well done to everyone.

Rosie Shaw 15yrs, and sponsored by The Rotary Club of Barnard Castle, was the winner of the vocalist category. Andrew Hedley 17yrs, won the instrumentalist section. Andrew played the euphonium and was sponsored by The Rotary Club of Chester-le-Street.
