Young Speakers Competition 2015

The Schools Public Speaking Competition
Monday, 16th March 2015

Unfortunately only two schools were able to take part this year, Beauchamps High and William de Ferrers. There was a total of three teams, two from William de  Ferrers and one from Beauchamps High. There should have been two full teams from Beauchamps High but one of their Senior speakers had to pull out with a throat infection on the day. There were four other individual speakers, two from each school taking part in the individual section competitions. The audience of parents, friends, teachers, competitors, Rotarians and their partners numbered about 70 and they were all duly impressed with the overall high standard of the speakers. The range of topics was as usual thought provoking. The judges in this 37th year of the competition were

Bob Plimmer, Doreen Woolston and Keith Wood. They were very impressed with the exceptional standard this year and Chairman Bob Plimmer was very complimentary about the range and diversity of the topics chosen and said that it had been very difficult for the judges to decide on the winners.

In the Junior Section (years 7 & 8) we were regaled with views on  'Shooting', 'It takes  time', 'Music as an inspiration', 'Creativity lies within' and 'Body image'.The winner of this section was Maisie Radely ( William de Ferrers) whose lively delivery and witty comment about 'Body Image' had us all spellbound.

The five speakers in the Intermediate Section (years 9 & 10) were pretty evenly matched. This time the winner was from Beauchamps High, Harry Preece, who    claimed he was a very  boring person but spoke wittily to the title 'I take it as a compliment' The others in this group spoke about 'You have the power', 'What does Towie say about us,' 'Brain freeze' and 'Discrimination.' Again they were evenly matched and all entertained the audience

There were three contestants in the Senior Section (years 11, 12 and 13) and here there were thought provoking and moving speeches on the dangers of drugs in society, the need to think about the choices we have to make in society and the winning speech about 'The Audacity of Hope' when you are a cancer sufferer. This was Rob White ( Beauchamps High) who made us all stop in our tracks.

Beauchamps High had two of the individual section winners in the Intermediate  and Senior Sections, but William de Ferrers School won the team prize of
