Club Blog March 2015

Our quest to find out strange facts about one another continued with a "20 Questions" member organised evening at the beginning of March. Each member filled out a sheet of 20 questions provided by Vicky prior to the evening and all we had to do was match the answers to the member. Some people were easily identifiable to all but some interesting facts on others were revealed...!

With Spring comes daffodils and Trowbridge Wessex Mead covered a stint at Sainsbury's Trowbridge for the Marie Curie Cancer Care Charity on Saturday 7th March. With a few members on holiday and two participating in Rotary training days, our numbers were a little thin on the ground that day, so many thanks to Graeme & Alice from Trowbridge Lions who helped us out.

On 10th March our triumphant march through the District 1200 skittles tournament was brought to a halt in our quarter final game played at home with Bradford on Avon Rotary Club. Everything was looking good and on target in the first half, but after a stop for food, TWM lost their edge and ultimately lost the match. Note for next year - do not feed the team until victory is secured!

Food is never far from our minds so Trev decided to combine  two interests, food & holidays, for his member organised evening on 16th March. A trip was organised to the Lamb on the Strand, puddings were ordered & enjoyed by all while browsing through photo books or laptop slideshows of our many and varied holiday destinations. Turns out we are a well travelled group and with lots of new ideas for future holidays, will keep on travelling.

Although a Rotary Club, we try to support other local charities & organisations, so a team from TMW was entered in the Bath Cancer Unit Quiz. We didn't shine but there was no disgrace either, coming somewhere in the middle. A good warm up for our own quiz night to come on 20th April.

The end of the month brought us a physical challenge - each year neighbouring Rotary District 1170 challenges our District 1200 to take part in the Exmoor Challenge. With walkers choosing either the 5.3 mile or the 10.3 mile walk, the number of walkers is tallied (1 point short walk, 2 points long walk) with the trophy being held for a year by the winning District. The sponsorship & entry fee proceeds are given to The Children's Hospice South West. With the walk starting at Porlock, Somerset, our group decided to make a weekend of it, driving to Porlock on the Saturday, staying in a BB, with the walk taking place on the Sunday. Losing an hour with the clocks changing, and with wet & windy weather, sadly the number of walkers was much lower than in previous years, but District 1200 proved once again to be the more hardy, securing the trophy for another year, and Trowbridge Wessex Mead had a most enjoyable weekend.
