STUDENT OF THE YEAR 2015

Student of the year 2015

STUDENT OF THE YEAR 2015

NOW in its fifteenth year, the annual Student of The Year awards again took place in the Council Chamber, Oldham Civic Centre.  With 30 nominations the selection committee, Chairman Past President Ray Coverley PHF, experienced perhaps their hardest task to date; it was only after much discussion and careful consideration the eventual winners emerged.  The standard was so high that two additional prizes were given to the runners up.

There are now two categories, those aged from 11 to 16 and those above.  The awards acknowledge students who have made an outstanding contribution to the local community whilst still maintaining high academicals standards.

The presentations in the capable hands of the Mayor of Oldham, Councillor Fida Husain, helped of course by his wife Tanui.  Followed up with tea and buns in the Mayors Parlour.

16+ WINNER

Holy Frazer (Oldham Sixth Form College), is a Student Ambassador, an elected member of the Student Association.  She has been responsible for organising two fundraising events Pink Day for breast cancer and Red Rose Day, according to Dr Richard Lee, two of the most memorable events in the college’s history,  raising over £2,000, shared between both charities.

For the past eight years, Holly has been a participant and wined in the Saddleworth Village Olympics.  Currently she is studying for A levels in English Literature, English Language, Geography and Ancient History.

 11 -16 WINNER

Mohammed UIsman Mahmood (Hathershaw College) is a volunteer at the Werneth and Freehold Community Development Project, and the weekly Junior Youth Club.

He was made manager of the schools Children In Need Appeal which raised £2,500.  He is a member of Oldham Youth Council, and is involved with the Creative Consultants Scheme.

As ever the Club is grateful to those who sponsored prizes, Oldham College and Elantra Investments for the lap tops, Waterhead Academy and Best Western Smokies Park for the Kindles.
