Bringing the Total to: £6,809.85

The appalling devastation resulting from the recent earthquake in Nepal prompted Rotarians from the Thornhill and District club to organise a collection day in the communities of mid and upper Nithsdale.
As well as street collections in Thornhill and Sanquhar, local businesses - The Hair Boutique in Thornhill and the Burnside Tearoom in Sanquhar, which are owned by Thornhill Rotarians, gave their clients the opportunity to contribute on the day. Rotarian Alan Daubney persuaded Kirconnel Bowling to participate by hosting a collection bucket at their Saturday bowling event.
A total of over £2,000 was raised on the day with a promise of matched funding by a local business man, bringing the total to over £4,000.
The Thornhill Club had already donated £1,000 from its charity account to supporting the Nepal appeal via The Big Give. This cash was also matched funded by The Big Give, making the value of this Thornhill Rotary donation up to £2,000.
The club has agreed to share the collection day proceeds between Shelter Box and Water Aid organisations. With temperatures dropping to zero in many parts of Nepal the need for shelter has become even more desperate. Over 500 of these boxes which contain all the essentials needed by families to survive, have already been sent to Nepal but many more are clearly needed.
Equally the availability of a supply of fresh water is crucial throughout Nepal and Water Aid personnel are already in that country, working hard in an effort to restore fresh water supplies to communities.
Thornhill Rotary President said Derek Clark said ‘As a club we were delighted to organise the collection day. There is no doubt that the tragedy in Nepal has touched us all and prompted people in our communities to dig deep on the day.
We were also touched by the generosity of the Buccleuch and Queensberry Caledonia Pipe Band who were giving a performance in Thornhill on the day and who passed on their collection tin to the Thornhill Rotary appeal.
I am most grateful also to the local business man who most generously agreed to match-fund our efforts.
At the end of the day the total value of the contribution to the Nepal appeal by Thornhill and District stands at over £6,000
This is a magnificent effort by our communities and I feel humbled at the generosity of everyone in responding to our appeal.’
