Tal y Cafn close to the  Roman settlement at Caerhun was the site of a Roman river crossing and when Edward the First built the castle at Conwy it  controlled the crossing between east and the now more important west bank.

Thomas Telford suspension bridge was completed in 1826 and runs alongside Robert Stephenson’s wrought iron tubular railway bridge that was opened officially in 1849. A new road bridge was opened in 1958.

Conwy road tunnel, the first immersed tube tunnel to be built in the UK. was opened in 1991and owes much to a structural engineer a lady called Jean Smith
