Education Project in Kosovo

This year, Mounts Bay Rotary Club is working with an NGO called The Ideas Partnership http://theideaspartnership.org to support an education project in Fushë Kosovë, a town in Kosovo.

Kosovo is the poorest country in Europe, by any measure, and we are helping some of the poorest communities in the country get access to education.

In an area with 95% unemployment and very low levels of literacy, education is the only route out of poverty. The project is designed to help the community to help themselves, and local community members, as well as other volunteers from Kosovo and abroad, work very hard to give their young people the opportunity to go to school.

The six month project will fund school bags (plus paper, pencils, etc.) for the children when they first go to school, as well as a learning coordinator, physiotherapist and some of the running costs of the project.

Two of our members, John & Del James, went out to Kosovo recently to find out more and were very impressed with the professionalism of the paid staff and volunteers. The pictures tell the story.

YOU DON'T ALWAYS SEE WHAT ROTARIANS ARE INVOLVED IN

John James, a member of the Rotary Club of Mounts Bay, made a trip to Kosovo to help deliver three fire engines and an ambulance to the hard-pressed emergency services out there.

The ambulance, which had been prepared for it's trip by local Rotarians in St Ives Bay was filled with redundant school uniforms, an operating table, stretchers, an inspection bed and other medical equipment. "It was quite a journey" said John on his return. We had a number of breakdowns on the way, but the mechanics we took with us were fantastic!"

The journey from Cornwall to Kosovo took six days and then the team split into four, each group delivering their vehicle to where it was required, in different parts of the country.

ROTARIANS ARE ORDINARY PEOPLE DOING EXTRAORDINARY THINGS WITH THEIR LIVES!!
