King Henry VIII School - Dragon's Den

A "Dragon's Den" event organised by the Rotary Club of Abergavenny

Rotarians Anthony Davies and John Bannon, along with local business woman Emma Goode, acted as "Dragons" in the KHS School Dragon's Den on Tuesday 16th July. The KHS Dragon's Den is part of the sixth form baccalaureate course which is run by the Business Studies teacher Mark Griffiths.
The Rotary Club of Abergavenny donate both a monetory prize and a cup for the overall winner of the competition. It is always eagerly contested and this year was no exception, with 12 teams competing for the coveted prizes.
Of course it would not be Dragon's Den without some team members having to endure a grilling of sorts and a wry grin was seen on the faces of all three judges when a young contestant was asked if he felt the £30m turnover in the first year of trading was realistic.   This drew a thoughtful response from the young 6th former, much to the amusement of the panel, as he replied it might be slightly optimistic!
The overall winner was the team called Tutor Town.  Several teams had come up with the idea of developing Apps and their idea was for an App Home Tutoring system on Skype with a well thought out and structured plan to support the application and make it into a realistic business.

A fantastic experience for the pupils is how the supporting staff connected to the event described it and one that our Rotarians thoroughly enjoyed. It would not be a real surprise if some of the competitors were to be seen in the financial news in the future, such was the quality of some of the entrants.
