Lunchtime Meeting - 12.45pm - Speaker J Powell

Mon, Jul 25th 2016 at 12:30 pm - 2:00 pm

John Powell tells us about his early life and some interesting family history.

John Powell.

A quiet moment for John as he tests the equipment before we all arrive!

Club member John Powell told us something of his early life and introduced us to some of his ancestors who lived at Glascoed Farm, Llansilin.

Club members were interested in the talk, listening closely as John spoke of his farming ancestors including their three wheeled tractor!

Most members present were unaware of the nearby early hydroelectric scheme which had been developed to provide hydro-electric power to Llansilin by creating a weir on the River Cynllaith - a scheme which only foundered when the Second World War made parts to repair the equipment impossible to source. John recalled, that the distribution of supplies to the village meant that lights at the farm dimmed when Llansilin Church turned its lights on!

On a recent visit to the site, John had seen the construction of a fish pass to enable spawning fish to reach stretches above the weir.

Members of the Club thanked John in the usual way for a very engaging personal talk.
