Lunch Meeting - Rob Walsh, Chief Executive of NELC

Today, Rob Walsh (Chief Exec of North East Lincs Council) and Salema Khatun (Member of Youth Parliament) joined us of lunch.  Rob gave us an update following his visit two years ago, particularly focusing on the budget and the outcome of the CPR (Comprehensive Spending Review). Rob informed us that the good news was that NEL Council has a budget! This being particularly important in addressing local health and ageing population challenges.

He stressed that the role of the Council is now far more challenging, with a 40% reduction in budget  in recent years set against growing demands. As such everything has to be affordable, ensuring that needs are met via thorough evaluation and effective resource application - just like running a good business!

Under devolution, he reinforced the message that local Councils are working together and the Combined Authorities are routes in which our Council can access much needed funding in the future.

Rob feels that the local economy is growing, particularly in the Seafood and Renewable Energy sectors, and in support of that, significant effort has to be put in place to address skill shortages in order to help local employment.

Rob finished on a positive note, saying he is still optimistic for the area, with many local projects coming into place.
