Car Parking for stallholders

Sat, Feb 24th 2024 at 4:27 am- Sat, Jun 8th 2024 - 4:00 pm

No car parking is permitted on The Common for members of the public attending the fair. Stallholders that need a vehicle to remain on the Common must apply for a parking permit.

Because of government (DEFRA) environmental conditions and local byelaws (enforced by the Council and the Commons Conservators) and the fact that most of the space available is needed to accommodate stalls, vehicles are only allowed on this area of the Common to unload and reload, except by previous agreement (in writing).

There is NO PUBLIC PARKING AVAILABLE on The Common at any time.

The reasons for granting of permission are limited strictly to the following:

  • if the stallholder is disabled and would not be able to operate as a stallholder, if unable to park their vehicle adjacent to their pitch;
  • if the vehicle is integral to the stall (i.e. the vehicle itself is the stall or a significant part of it);
  • if the vehicle is part of the stallholder's display (e.g. a driving school car).

In the last 2 cases, sufficient pitches must be hired to accommodate the whole of the vehicle - no part of it may be outside of the pitch limits.

The need to park a vehicle adjacent to the pitch in order to replenish stock during the day cannot be considered as a reason. Parking for this purpose will be available on an area of the common immediately adjacent to the fair, along the other side of Ashfield Lane. This area has limited capacity, which will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. If you are unable to book a parking place in this area, then provided you arrive early enough, car parking is available just a minute's walk away in the public (chargeable) car park on the other side of the High Street, so that it is viable, for most stallholders that wish to replenish stock during the day, to do so without difficulty. Stallholders that have this requirement are recommended to book a pitch at the Loop Road end of the Common.

There are a very few specific exceptions to these general rules and we consider each case on its merits. There are only a few pitches which can actually accommodate a vehicle adjacent to the pitch without occupying part of another pitch - and all of these are booked out very early - so disabled stallholders requiring this facility are advised to book as early as possible.

If permission to park a vehicle (either in/near your pitch or in the Stalhholders Parking Area) is granted, you will be given on arrival, by a Rotary steward, a pass for use on the day. All vehicles without a pass MUST BE OFF ANY PART OF THE COMMON BY 9:30am latest and entry of vehicles onto the common after 9:30am MAY BE REFUSED or impossible because assembled stalls etc. block the route. Any vehicles remaining on the common without a pass may be removed or clamped without further warning.

There is very limited parking on local roads without cones or yellow lines (but be aware that significant congestion occurs in the area on Fair day and police may still remove cars they consider are causing an obstruction on bus routes, even if they are legally parked) so we strongly recommend using the public car parks.
