Megan and Beth star at District Conference
Beth Sutherland and Megan McKenzie were thrust into the Rotary Hall of Fame along with Head teacher Dawn McKenzie as they appeared at The Rotary District Conference which took place over the Halloween weekend. The first section was a presentation to an audience of over 300 all about the different Youth opportunities Rotary supports. One presentation, which had been scheduled to be given by a large Aberdeen Rotakids club, was to illustrate how such clubs embody the principles of helping others, being aware of the community needs and putting others first in all the club does.
Unfortunately the Aberdeen club was unable to attend as their teachers father took ill suddenly and she had to go and care for him. At the eleventh hour Conference Chairman Alistair Risk turned to Head teacher Dawn McKenzie from Brora Primary and asked if she and her current and past club Presidents could step in and deliver a 10 to 15 minute presentation. This would show how Rotakids help their community in Brora, how Rotary helps the schools in delivering rounded and caring pupils and tell everyone just how much fun they have carrying out their projects. These are as varied as beach cleaning, coffee mornings and concerts for the elderly, Shoeboxes for the poor in Eastern Europe, singing carols at the Christmas lights event, entertaining at the Brora Fete or being sponsored in the Rotary Global End Polio Swimarathon. Dawn accepted saying ‘Rotary and Rotakids has made such a difference to our school and has helped our pupils to become more confident and to appreciate the needs of others - how could I refuse (even if I am scared stiff!!).
Dawn was delighted to help and the girls, while apprehensive, agreed to do their bit at the Macdonald Aviemore Resort Theatre on Saturday morning. They were simply brilliant and a huge success receiving a standing ovation. As a result of their performance a considerable number of Rotary clubs spoke to Alistair to find out how they too can form Rotakids club. Well done Dawn, Beth and Megan – real Rotakids Ambassadors!
