PRESIDENT'S REPORT

I was coerced into being President by a number of Past Presidents who all assured me that it would be over in no time at all and that it would be enjoyable.

Well, time has passed quickly for sure – it is now more than two months since taking over the reins from Past President Ian and up until now it has been very enjoyable despite having to harness family and friends to assist with the Garden Party.

Yes, the Garden Party kept Di and I extremely busy and Di is still having dreams of working out quantities of food (and drink). We both really appreciated all the thanks we received and actually really enjoyed the day.  There were many elegant ladies’ hats and amusing men’s headgear.  The winners of the ladies’ competition were Diane Tuke and Carol Nidd – chosen by Emma, Di’s beautician who had kindly volunteered to help with the event.  I chose the men’s winner based on the originality and the fact that Stewart (Brown) kept it on almost all the time.  The tree age competition was won by Bill Goodwin who guessed the total of 144 correctly – without having put ages for each tree (the task of addition would probably have been too difficult…).

Prior to the Garden Party a very successful AM AM Charity  Golf Day took place, very well organised by Stuart Falconer, Dennis Dunn and a number of other members.  Di organised the catering and had generous assistance from other Rotarians’ wives who all worked hard to keep the golfers fed and watered. The weather was great, the catering excellent (the Kitkats and Pimms being hits) and the quality of golf played was variable (as is the norm).  However, lots of prizes meant many happy golfers.

A very interesting wine tasting 5th Wednesday evening was organised and conducted by John Clark.  Owing to good feedback I hope that this will become an annual event on the calendar.

The next important event is the Sports Day on 26th September, the prize giving and dinner will be held at the Grimsby Golf Club at 7pm; unfortunately I will be unable to attend due to a trip to Australia to visit family.

On my return I will be presenting a short slide show on the 28th October titled “People, Roads and Animals” based on my and Di’s adventures over the last ten years in Southern Africa.  The venue will be the Humber Royal, the venue for slides and acoustics is excellent and I do hope the attendance will be good and also that the stories I tell will be believed!
