The Rotary Young Chef of the year District Competition took place in Billingshurst in the heart of rural West Sussex on Saturday 24th February. The event was held at The Wield Community School at which eight youngsters took part from across District 1145, an area which stretches from South London to the West Sussex coast, and includes 100 Rotary Clubs.

The event was organised by Rotarian Shirdi (Syd) Wale while the judging was presided over by four distinguished chefs headed by Mr Omero Gallucci, a highly respected member of the Craft Guild of Chefs. The participants were charged with cooking a nutritious three course meal for two for just £15, in two hours. Competition was fierce and all the youngsters, whose ages ranged from 11 to 17, worked hard to present their attractively laid out meals at the end of this time.

The winning entrant was our own Kitty Grosse from St Nic's School, whose menu comprised a smoked haddock and leek tartlet starter, followed by a main course of bacon wrapped pork in vermouth sauce served with gratin dauphinoise potatoes, baked carrots and Romanesco cauliflower. This was topped off with a dessert of spicy apple and pear crumble with blackberry cream.

The prize of an engraved Rose bowl and certificate was presented by the Vice Chairman of West Sussex County Council Mr Roger Oakley, assisted by the District Governor for District 1145 Mr Jim Onions.

Kitty will now go on to compete in the Regional Final of Rotary Young Chef Competition at Merton College, Morden, on 17th March.
