Rotary Global Swimarathon 2016

.

On a day better designed for skiing than water sports the Brora Rotakids along with their friends from Dornoch, Golspie and Rogart primary schools boosted the turn out and ensured the success of the East Sutherland Rotary Polio Swimarathon on Saturday 20th February.  A total of around 80 enthusiasts of all swimming abilities gathered at the Golspie Pool and swam their hearts out for charity and will have raised over £1500 by the time the sponsorship pennies all come in.  With donations from Rotary and the Bill Gates Foundation this will rise to nearer £12,000 to boost the final push in the fight to eradicate Polio from the world.

The age group ranged from 4 to 74 plus and the atmosphere was fantastic as the Mums and Dads joined in and perhaps swum for the first time in years and surprisingly, claimed to have enjoyed it.  Certainly the noise within the complex was like a pop concert when Rod Stewart takes the stage!!  Two brave souls of more mature years, Rodger Boyce and John Chambers, started slowly but determinedly and succeeded in swimming their age in lengths - that is over a mile each in old money.  Something the younger and fitter Interact members did almost without getting breathless.

Rotary hopes to have put an end to this awful illness within 2 years and then turn to Malaria so lets finish it now.  The appeal is still open and anyone who would like to donate to the End Polio Now campaign can donate via the Rotary club of East Sutherland web site MyDonate page HERE or by handing over donations to any member or at Kingcraig Fabrics in Brora or Dornoch.
