It is three years since we went to Pitsford to hear about the work of the Wildlife Trust wardens, and this return visit certainly gave us more food for thought as we endeavoured to answer a wild-life quiz they set for us.  Someone I spoke to said he had scored 4.5 correct answers, which I suspect was a lot more than most of us managed!  It was however a great idea and we were taught a lot as the answers were rolled out.

Rns David G and Richard managed to avoid the ignominy of a low score by disappearing half way through collect the fish & chips for all there.  This was a true case of Service above Self, as they missed the opportunity to take part in the final, prize question, which was to guess the number of species identified at Pitsford since records began.  The joint winners were Rtns Riaz and Stan who certainly earned their reward, as guesses ranged from 1,500 to at least 180,000!                   

Most remembered to bring chairs, drinks and cutlery.  Some even brought salt, vinegar and ketchup.  They must have been Scouts or Guides in earlier days, as “be prepared” is something that remains for ever.  For those that didn’t remember these essentials, true Rotary Spirit was in abundance as condiments and drinks were shared with all.

While eating the very hot fish and chips under a blazing sun it reminded us that the last visit was on a very similar warm and balmy evening, so we perhaps ought to think about going more often, if it means we can guarantee good weather.
