Golspie High School Interact Club

After a slow start in August 2015 the club is now really flying.  After a restructure pupils got together and decided that they would like to look at what was going on in their community. They decided to collect and make Christmas Hampers for people in their village that they had identified.  Over a period of 5 weeks dried/tinned/packaged items were collected. These were laid out during a lunch time and placed into hampers that they decorated using wrapping paper.  The lunch time was a hive of activity and the young people really enjoyed doing this.  Hampers were not only given to identified residents of our local villages of Helmsdale, Brora, Golspie, Rogart and Lairg but also the Brora Hub and Seaforth House.

To extend this work in the community four of our Interacters also attended the Brora Village Hub and helped to serve Christmas Dinner to those who visit.  The four volunteers had an absolutely brilliant time and those at the hub really enjoyed their company.

On returning to school after the Christmas Break, the Interacters were given Dementia Awareness training from Patrick Gray of Helmsdale Hub.  The Interacters all found this very interesting and there we now have an Interacter volunteering at Helmsdale Hub on a Friday morning.

Last weekend four Interacters volunteered for the Brora Village Hub's sale of work. They admirably gave up their Saturday afternoon and helped the hub to raise over £1000.  They had an amazing time and the Hub staff were really thankful.  The next day two of the Interacters appeared at the East Sutherland Wheelers Crit and helped to Marshall throughout the race giving up their Sunday and were a great help to the smooth running of the day.

This term the group are hoping to raise awareness of the East Sutherland Care Forum, they have a guest speaker attending in a couple of weeks and are then holding an Easter Jumper Competition (the school community have to decorate their own) and these will be judged and prizes given for a pupil from each of the villages, this will be held alongside a bake sale.

This group of young people really are a super bunch and all are earning Saltire Awards for their efforts.

Pictures show the Christmas Sale, talk from Patrick and serving lunch at the Hub.
