The Gift of Sight from Tameside Rotary to Bangladesh

This story starts at a The District Conference (1285) in 2015 when one of the guest speakers was John Miles of Global Sight Solutions (then Guildford Rotary Eye Project). He explained the success in setting up eye hospitals, mainly in India and Africa. In the audience was Andy Williams founder president of the newly formed Tameside Rotary accompanied by fellow Rotarian Mizan Rahman. Mizan,  who was originally came from Sylhet, Bangladesh described that a charity he had set up, Just Help Foundation, already operating an eye clinic and had available a building that could be up graded to an Eye Hospital. Andy quickly thought if he could bring John and Mizan together – with the support of Rotary – then just maybe we could provide a modern Eye Hospital in a much needed area of Bangladesh

Well some 5 years later, delayed by Covid, working with Sylhet Pride Rotary Club, a Rotary Global Grant for $150K was approved. Many Rotary Clubs in our District supported this project plus the Rotary Club of Sowerby Bridge, who had learnt of this project via Tameside Rotary website. The necessary impovements to the building and the purchase of the medical equipment required were completed during this year. Eye operations have now been carried out for the last six months.

Several Tameside Rotarians, including founder President Andy Williams, John Moon and Arthur Boswell plus Andy’s grandson (Alex 17) are travelling to Bangladesh in January 2023 for the formal opening of the new Eye Hospital. Mizan plus other members of Just Help Foundation will also be present.

Andy said “The visiting group are looking forward/excited to see the progress which has been made”.

Tameside Rotary and Just Help Foundation would like to take this opportunity to thank all those that have supported this life changing project – giving the gift of sight. More information can be located at www.TamesideRotaryClub.com
