Tonight’s meeting of the Rotary Club of Motherwell and Wishaw was very busy. Pupils, parents and teachers were in attendance to witness the presentation of a number of awards. Our annual Secondary Schools Golf Competition took place on Monday, 7th September, at Wishaw Golf Club. The winners of the Clementson Trophy, with an excellent score of 111, were the pupils from Cardinal Newman High School. Accompanied by their Head Teacher, Kenny Ross, the victors received the trophy from Millie Clementson, widow of the late Douglas Clementson, who inaugurated the Competition.

This summer, the Rotary Club of Motherwell and Wishaw sponsored four secondary pupils to attend the Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) outward bound scheme at Ardeonaig on the banks of the River Tay. Usually, the RYLArians are asked to give a short presentation of their experiences at RYLA. This year, however, we had a question and answer interview with Youth Convenor Roy Simpson posing the questions. The four pupils, Barry Williams from 2/4 Boys Brigade, James Mullen and, twins, Emily and Sophie Tougher-Mitchell, all three, from Our Lady's High School, gave a very interesting and enjoyable account of their experiences at RYLA.

Each year, the John Mair Trophy is awarded to the RYLA candidate, who, in the opinion of their peers, is most improved over the week and this year's winner was Sophie Tougher-Mitchell.  The Trophy is presented in memory of John Mair, a Past Presedent of the Rotary Club of Motherwell and Wishaw and Past District Governor of District 1020, who was instrumental in the setting up of RYLA for the District. We were delighted that John’s widow, Margaret, was able to attend and present the trophy to Sophie.
