John Swinney - Deputy First Minister

Thu, Dec 3rd 2015 at 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

John Swinney, Deputy First Minister, addresses a very well attended meeting of the Club

There was a large turnout of members and guests at tonight’s meeting of the Rotary Club of Motherwell and Wishaw to hear the Deputy First Minister John Swinney, MSP. Before his talk he made a presentation on behalf of the Rotary Club to Holly McCusker, a sixth year pupil at Dalziel High School. Holly had recently shown the Rotary motto of ‘Service above Self’ when she alone helped an injured man on the road at the junction of Hamilton Road and the Loaning. Holly was accompanied by her parents, her sister and Yvonne Savage a teacher from Dalziel.
Mr Swinney has been an MSP for 18 years and was a parliamentary candidate for 8 years prior to being elected therefore for 26 years he has been aware of Rotary and the work it does locally and on a world wide scale. Serving a Perthshire constituency he knew a lot about rural Rotary visiting fares and agricultural shows. Despite his many attempts his only prize from a Rotary Tombola stall has been one drumstick lollipop. He recognised the Club's WishWell project in Malawi and hoped for its continued success. He then spoke in detail of his Government's programme to tackle inequality and of growing the economy. The Minister then fully answered a wide ranging number of questions put to him. When asked what kept him awake at nights Mr Swinney replied using a quote from the late Conservative Prime Minister Harold McMillan "Events dear boy - Events". He left the club to join a telephone conference on his way back home discussing his forthcoming budget, all the while, driving into the Forth Road Bridge situation!
