Upminster Junior School Collection of Shoe Boxes
Teacher Sarah Rowe organised the Rotary Shoe Box collection just before Christmas 2015. The Boxes were filled with many useful items & toys which Rotary will send to children in need from different parts of the world.
Headteacher Mr Woodford aided by representatives from year 6 handed the boxes over to the Rotarians who will forward them to the Rotary club that ships them overseas.
The President and members of the Rotary Club of Hornchurch & Upminster would like to thank Mrs. Rowe and all the Children for supporting the scheme which will make many children happy.
The adults in the photograph are from left to right Rotarian Terry Monk Headmaster Mr. Woodford and at the back Rotarian George Larkey. The children are six most helpful, polite and enthusiastic pupils from year six. They helped to carry the boxes, over 80, to my car in order for me to take them to a collection point in Ingatestone. From here the boxes are collected and distributed to the countries outlined in the paragraph below the contents information
The boxes were primarily for school aged children and contained a variety of gifts from the list that I have included below.

Household Goods ~ For older folk & families
Scarfs, gloves, hats, wrapped soap, toothpaste, toothbrush, disposable razors, shampoo, soap flakes, pan scourers, antiseptic cream, bandages, face or body creams, cosmetics, pens, writing pad & envelopes, T lights, candles, sewing kit, scissors…
Baby ~ Age up to 12 months
This is given to new mothers and can include baby wipes, cotton wool buds, baby shampoo, baby oil, talc powder, bonnet, bootees and mitts, baby grow, knitted matinee coat, small soft toy or plastic rattle…
The Rotary Shoebox Scheme is not just for Christmas!
Originally started by North West Rotary clubs in 1994, the Rotary Shoebox Scheme was then intended to provide children of Iasi, in north-east Romania with Christmas gifts. Since then, the scheme has become a national project supported not only by Rotary clubs but also by individuals, schools, companies, churches, Inner Wheel, Rotaract & Interact etc.
Indeed we are delighted to welcome anyone who would like to be involved.
Gifts are now sent out throughout the year to many different countries in Central and Eastern Europe. Toys are especially useful all year round for Birthday presents in the Orphanages, Homes and Hospitals. All age groups, including teenagers, have welcomed the boxes. We have delivered to children and teenagers in orphanages, hospitals and also to street kids. To Adults in TB and AIDS hospitals. To disadvantaged families and to women’s refuges. To older folk in hostels with no supporting families.
In addition to Romania, Shoebox gifts have been delivered to Belarus, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Albania, Croatia and Kosovo.
Each year we now send around 60,000 Shoeboxes or gifts. SEE RECENT DELIVERIES
The strengths of the Rotary Shoebox Scheme over other similar schemes are:
It operates all year round.
The boxes are distributed to known contacts
We can guarantee that every Shoebox goes to a deserving child or family.
The boxes now travel either overland by lorry, or by sea container. We use the services of International Aid Trust (IAT), a Christian Charity who have a long association with Rotary in the north-west of England and who help with both Transportation and Warehouse storage. Distribution is always through known contacts.
We are officially tied in with Hope & Homes and regularly supply their foster homes with boxes of gifts.
