2016 Rossendale Rotary Young Artist Competition
Rossendale Rotary are pleased to announce the winners of their 2016 Rossendale Rotary Young Artist Competition.
For many years, Rossendale Rotary Club have given money to our local Primary schools to help them with their developments. Over the last three years St Mary’s Primary School in Rawtenstall, has had support to help them with their Library Project: Balladen have been assisted to buy a White Board and this year Haslingden Primary School have been given a grant to help them fund their need for more computer equipment. As well as this, the club encourage the Secondary Schools to take part in an annual Northwest Technology Tournament and each year they sponsor a student to attend the Young Leadership week long course in the Lake District.
In addition to all of this, a member of the club, Stuart Holt, who is responsible for the Youth Development work, proposed that they set up a competition to celebrate the Art Work done by students in our valley schools. The club readily agreed to this idea and to give cash prizes to the winning students and to set up an exhibition of all the entries, for the public to enjoy. The theme that they were asked to represent in their art was –The Beauty of the Earth.
All the Primary and Secondary schools were asked to submit three pieces of art work done by the pupils in their schools. These represented the winners in each school and all these students will get a framed certificate from the Rossendale Rotary Club, to recognise that they are indeed all winners. As well as this, the Art Work was arranged into two categories: Junior Section from the Primary Schools with two prizes of £30 each and a Secondary Section with one prize of £50.
The schools have responded enthusiastically to this event and submitted 28 works of art for this competition. Four members of the club –Sharon Whitaker, Robert Driver, Alan Forrest and Stuart Holt were joined by a retired Art Teacher and Ofsted Inspector-Janice Crowley- to judge the pieces and award prizes.
The Junior School Prize Winners are:
Amelia Watkins from Helmshore Primary School.
Sara-Jane Chippendale fromWaterfoot Primary School.
The Secondary School Prize Winner is:
Caitlin Woodend from Haslingden High School.
The club are now organising an exhibition of all the entries to be put on public display, later this year.
